Podiatry – the mechanics
26 bones, 19 muscles and 30 joints in each of your feet, work to keep you balanced and support your body. Mal-alignments can cause problems, commonly flat feet, persistent ankle sprains, corns and callouses. Symptoms often present further up the body, including the knees, hips and back, resulting in pain. Biomechanics is the understanding of these relationships. Podiatry treatment is individually tailored and can involve devices in shoes and exercises. The aim of treatment is to resolve the symptoms by addressing the causes.
Diagnosis
We are the first practice in the UK to use the F-scan Mobile system, an in-shoe pressure measurement system to take very precise measurements of how your foot is loading in real time when walking or running. We can take the system to the running track or your workplace if appropriate. We also use digital Video Gait Analysis equipment. This records you walking on our treadmill and can be combined with the F-scan Mobile data to establish what your hips, knees, back and shoulders are doing when your foot is loading.
Orthotics
Orthotics can be very useful in relieving postural pain in the back, hips, knees, legs and feet. Individual Prescription Functional Foot Orthoses are designed to alter the mechanical forces that are applied to the foot and other structures including the knees, hips and back. In altering these forces the podiatrist is able to reduce stress on these structures aiding recovery from injury and preventing further injury. Promoting more fluid motion in the body, in turn reduces stresses in the areas that are causing pain.
